About Jan Villarrubia

Jan Villarrubia’s first poetry collection Return to Bayou Lacombe was recently published by Cinnamon Press in Wales. Her poems have been published in Envoi, The Literary Review, Mississippi Valley Review, New Laurel Review and many others. She has been teaching creative writing, specifically the writing of free verse poetry, to children since the 1980’s.

A New Orleans native, Villarrubia has won numerous fellowships, grants and awards for her other plays including a Theatre Fellowship from the Louisiana State Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Among her other full-length plays are Miz Lena’s Backyard (Dramatic Publishing), Odd Fellow’s Rest (Xavier Review Press) and Yellow Roses That Big.

Villarrubia has been active in her community since 1992 when she co-founded DramaRama, a theatre and performing arts festival held annually in New Orleans for 15 years. She is a key artist collaborator in the Lakeview team of Home, New Orleans? which was conceived as a healing tool shortly after the federal levees broke flooding over 80% of the city the day after Hurricane Katrina.
